August 2007
R.E. Port July 07
Hello again. The summer moves along with a busy schedule. We’ve had successful Regional Club races, Solo, and Rally school and event in July. As I write this Heartland Park Topeka is undergoing course changes prior to our August event and the ATT Runoffs.
The August 18 &19 KVRG Club Races should have a great turnout on the revised course. Please come out and view the action, or better yet, volunteer to work. To volunteer, just go to the KVRG website from the link on our website.
The MidDiv Divisional Solo series comes to HPT Solo Pad on August 4 & 5. We need a great turnout. (Eds. Note: Due to publishing delays, Larry’s comment is a little late. However, a lot of good folks put in a lot of hard work to make a for a very successful event with over 195 drivers from as far away as Washington state. Please see the winners in this issue and the full results with PAX on the Kansas Region website.) Multiple circumstances, including a rainout, have made this season a challenge. Sign up and compete with the best in MidDiv.
The next Kansas Region Rally is in November. It’ll be a great way to end the sports car season. Kansas City Region is staging an event in September.
We once again will need volunteers to help with The Tire Rack® Solo Nationals in September. We will not be doing a warm-up event this year. We do have a contract to provide volunteers. Please help Kansas Region and SCCA by volunteering. Information on opportunities will come out shortly.
Next meeting of the Board is August 8 at Frances O’Dooleys Grill & Pub. You are welcome to join us. Returning to Membership Meetings was suggested at our July Board meeting. Please gives us your input. What would bring you to a Membership meeting? What kind of program? How often should they be held? Where? Please give us your thoughts.
Have a good month. See you at the Races!
Return of the Yellow Brick Road Rally
Five rally teams met Sunday July 22 at the SCCA National Headquarters to compete in the second Kansas Region road rally of 2007. Rallymaster Randy Gregg reused parts of the 2006 Yellow Brick Road National Rally to create the course for this event.
The first leg went south past Heartland Park and through Overbrook, over the Pomona Reservoir Dam, through the cities of Pomona and Lone Star to the first checkpoint near the town of Clinton. Leg 2 went north and west to the checkpoint in Tecumseh City Park. The final leg wound around the west side of Perry Lake to the finish at the Governor’s Mansion in north Topeka. "Given the number of lakes and reservoirs we saw and traversed, I should have called this The Dam Rally", said Randy.
Overall winners of the event were Candy and Jan Gerber from the SCCA Nebraska Region with a total of 45 seconds of error over the three legs of the event. Proving that you don’t need a sports car to do well in rallys, the Gerbers were in their big, red Dodge Ram pickup truck. Second place went to Jaguar Club of North America (JCNA) members Cynthia Loveall and Dave Belanger, who drove Dave’s beautiful XK8. Third overall and first novice went to first time rallyists Bill and Susie White of Kansas City, Kansas in a supercharged Roush Mustang. Bruce Bettinger and Lonnie Heston, who made the Volvo road trip from Derby/Wichita, were fourth and would have contended for the lead had they not received a max penalty on the first leg. Rounding out the field was Dan McConnell and Kathy Mohn in Dan’s very blue 350Z roadster. Dan deserves a round of "Thanks!" for his work in promoting the event to non-SCCA clubs in the area.
The next Kansas Region rally is scheduled for November 11 when the "Pavement Ends" rally makes its northeast Kansas debut. True to the name, the event will be conducted on good quality but unpaved roads, allowing more checkpoints and shorter event. Pending RE approval, this event will be paired with the November 10 Jarbalo Jog 3, sanctioned by the Kansas City Region SCCA, creating a fall "Kansas Rally Weekend
